Doa'a's Story

Name: Doa’a Ayad
Date of Birth: 2.2.2007
Date of Surgery: 12.05.2007
Place of Origin: Gaza

Doa’a was a relaxed and cheerful ten month old girl who arrived at SACH from Gaza on 11.20.2007 accompanied by her grandmother. Doa’a was diagnosed with congenital heart disease at birth, but she received no treatment.

Doa’a was diagnosed with PDA, a large hole between the 2 cardiac ventricles (lower chambers of the heart). Due to this defect, Doa’a was in heart failure, and if left untreated it would have caused pathologic changes in the pulmonary vessels. Eventually she would have been inoperable. Her Mitral Valve was also in need of repair to ensure proper blood flow.

Dr. Sasson and his team repaired the problem surgically on 12.05.2007. There were no major complications. Doa’a is currently well and asymptomatic. She and her grandmother were able to return home to Gaza on 12.15.2007.
